Bornholm, Denmark

After hearing so much about Bornholm, one of the Danish beautiful islands in the Baltic sea, I finally got to affirm its beauty last summer.

The island is one of the coldest islands in Denmark during winter but extremely charming during summer. August is probably the best time to visit.

You will need to take a train and then a ferry ride from Copenhagen to Bornholm. The entire journey takes approximately 3 hours or lesser. First, take a regional train to Kastrup and from Kastrup, change to a train that goes to Ystad (Sweden). Hop off and take a ferry (ferry terminal is right next to the train station) from Ystad to Bornholm.

Despite changing different transportation modes, the journey is not cumbersome at all. In fact, it is quite interesting as you can have some snacks or even shop in duty free shops in the ferry and if you are not into shopping, you may proceed to the top deck and get some fresh breeze while admiring the Baltic sea.

Many load their cars or bikes into the ferry so that it is easier to commute within Bornholm. Taking the public transportation is possible but it may take quite a lot of waiting time as the frequency of buses are low (usually about 1 or 2 hours).

If you are a keen cyclist/biker, you could cycle around the island. The island is cyclist friendly. Alternatively, you may also rent a bicycle.

For us, the lazy bums, we rented a car. Do note that Automatic-geared cars are not common in Denmark/Bornholm. Should you need one, do make an advanced booking.

It is adviseable to spend at least 3 days in Bornholm so you could go around the island. The northern part of the island have more hotels, probably due to the Hammershus castle ruin and the coastline in the north.

Dueodde beach - was said to be one of the most beautiful beach in that area.

Don't you just love the hue of the water, sky and the greens. I could just sit there and watch for hours. Reading a book or painting by the beautiful scenery sounds good too :)

The famous Hammershus. It can be windy journey up to the castle ruin. There is a lot of wind from the Baltic sea. From time to time, you will have tail wind pushing you from behind. Fun if you are going up but not when you coming down as the path is a little steep - caution for the light-weighted ones :p
