History of Valentine's Day

I have no idea what to blog about today and I just came across an article about "Festival of Love" a.k.a Valentine's Day.

For all these years, I merely knew 14th February is the day when everyone gets lovey dovey. It's known as the Valentine's Day. Most people perceive it as the day for couples. My lecturer once said that it's also a day to show someone you care about how much they mean to you. Well, they can be your parents, your friends or simply someone dear to you.

Has anyone wonder how did Valentine's Day come about? Anyway, you can read it from here. Touching isn't it? I suppose you would see Valentine's Day a little differently after reading about its origin.

I recalled gathering from a radio programme that the country which celebrated Valentine's Day the most is Korea. Unbelievable, huh? They practically celebrate Valentine's Day on the monthly - on the 14th or sometimes 11th. Each month is celebrated with different significance. I could not remember what are they but pretty interesting huh?

The Koreans also has a celebration known as the Black Day. It sounded a little sober. Anyway, the Black Day is for singles to get together and eat noodle with black bean sauce. It's somewhat a consolation to those who didn't receive gifts and those who did not have someone to celebrate Valentine's Day with.

White Day is the opposite of Black Day. It's first celebrated in Japan in the year 1978. It's said to be the day when the men answer to the ladies' confession of love by showering the latter with (more expensive) gifts. Chocolates are often the common gifts. Traditionally, preferred gifts were white chocolates, stuffed toys, lingerie, jeweleries candies and cookies. 14th March (White Day) is declared as a holiday in some countries - namely, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.
